SYMPTOMS OF MEASLES

Measles symptoms can start 7 to 18 days after you are exposed to the virus.  The symptoms usually start within 10 days.

The first symptoms of measles are:

Measles makes people feel very unwell.  Tamariki can be in bed for up to 5 days and will likely be too sick to come to kura for at least 2 weeks.

RED OR DARK PINK RASH

The next symptom is a red or dark pink rash.  The spots are blotchy and join together.  It usually starts on the face or behind the ears 3 days after the first symptoms, before moving down the body.  The rash is not usually itchy.  It can last for a week or more.  There may also be white spots in the mouth.

WHO TO CONTACT FOR MEDICAL ADVICE

If our tamariki have symptoms that you are worried about:

TAMAITI ATTENDANCE

Attendance is the first step in accessing learning, achieving education success and involving wellbeing and lifelong outcomes.

To help our tamariki be a happy iwi learner, please ensure our tamariki attend regularly.  If not, please contact Whaea Rangiherehere and inform her of the reason why your tamaiti is absent from kura.

POWHIRI

Throughout the year, our kura tuakana assist our ruruhi and koroheke by welcoming manuwhiri onto Turangawaewae Marae.  The dates of the remaining pōwhiri are listed below.

MEET & GREET

Thursday 15th February at 6.00pm is an opportunity for the whānau to meet the teaching staff.  It is also a time for the staff to share a glimpse of our four learning areas for 2024.  Hope to see you.

UNIFORM

Last year, the dress standard of the kura uniform worn by our tamariki dropped.  Throughout this year, please ensure our tamariki wear the proper uniform, neat and tidily.  Look sharp, feel sharp!

Kōtiro - red kura polo, red kura sweat top or black kura hoodie accompanied by a black skirt or black shorts or black track pants.

Tama - red kura polo, red kura sweat top or black kura hoodie accompanied by a black short or black track pants.

Unless the weather is unfavourable, do not allow our tamariki to wear gumboots, especially during the warmer months of the year.

To all the whānau who have tamariki in Ākara Iti, Ākara Nui and Heramana, please ensure our kōtiro have a black skirt and black stockings.  Our tama are to wear black trousers.  Throughout the year, our senior classes attend events held at the marae and I want them dressed appropriately for each occasion.

Secondly, can all clothing items be named.  This makes it easier to reclaim items that are stored in the lost ‘n’ found closet at kura.

Ko Taare Bradshaw rātou ko Tautehapa Wymer, ko Thunda-Reign Ahipene-Wall.  E whakaatu mai ana rātou i te tika o ngā kākahu o te kura.  Kia tūpato kōtiro mā, pūrotu mai!

PŌTAE HEI WHAKAHAUMARU

During term 1, please provide a pōtae for our tamariki.  Our sun is traditionally unfavourable during this time of the year.  The kura will provide sun-block.

UPDATE CONTACT DETAILS

If your contact details have changed or your child lives at a different address, please inform Rangiherehere Katipa (ph. 824 8099 or email office@bernardfergusson.school.nz).   If you have any enquiries regarding the learning of your tamaiti, please contact Whaea Rangiherehere to arrange a time to meet with your child’s kaiako.

KURA VAN

Please inform Whaea Rangiherehere if you intend to send your child to kura on the van.  Take careful note, this service is free.  In addition, our tamariki are to respect our kura van.  NO graffiti, NO discarded food wrappers and absolutely NO vandalism to the seats in the van.

E KAI I TE KAI, KIA TIKA TE KAI

This is a saying by Koro Leo Muru to eat properly.  I am urging all whānau to encourage our tamariki to eat everything they receive in their lunch.  This includes vegetables, salads and meat.   If it was good enough for our generation to eat everything, it is good enough for our tamariki at kura to eat everything.  Kia mārohirohi mai tātou!

TE MAHI KAUHOE

I believe all our tamariki at kura need to learn to be efficient swimmers.  We have two rivers flowing through our town.  I want to ensure our tamariki are confident in the water, they know how to conserve energy in the water and they are efficient in their swimming techniques.

I highly encourage the whānau to ensure our tamariki are equipped everyday with the swimming necessities to learn to swim.   Necessities include: a towel, appropriate swimming attire, goggles and swimming caps are highly recommended especially our tamariki with long hair.

KIA TŪPATO TAMARIKI MĀ!

Auē mai te auē!  The kura has received a number of reports of our tamariki, teina mai, tuakana mai, playing on the roads.  Waiting for the traffic to get closer and then crossing the road.  Our kaiako are informing our tamariki of the dangers of this nonsense behaviour.  I ask our parents to talk to our tamariki about the dangers of playing on the roads.

In addition, whānau continue to park opposite the tomokanga causing the traffic to congest outside our kura.  Please park and wait in the kura carpark.

KAPA HAKA FESTIVAL

Thursday 7th December, our kura is holding a kapa haka festival.  Our day begins at 9.30am and concludes at 2.00pm at which time our tamariki will be released to return home.

KAIAKA

Our kura has been a hive of activity this term with kapa haka, daily exercise and preparation for our kura athletics.  Our tamariki should be proud of their efforts to firstly prepare for athletics and then exert the necessary effort on the day to work hard.  If our tamariki were fortunate to gain a placing in the different events, congratulations!  If not, we have to continue to work hard.

WHAT IS YOUR COMMITMENT TO TE REO MĀORI?

As parents, what is your commitment to speaking te reo Māori to our tamariki at home?  How often do you converse in te reo Māori with our tamariki within the comfort of your kāinga.  Every morning when our tamariki wake up, how often do you say, “Mōrena.”  How often do you speak what you know?  The staff at kura are making a genuine effort to increase the frequency of our tamariki conversing with each other in te reo Māori.  I highly encourage all whānau to commit to speaking what you know to our tamariki so that our language becomes the norm at kura.  Kia kaha katoa!

HE REO KEI TE KĀINGA

Here are some kīanga (phrases) the whānau can say at home to make our reo the norm at kura:

He oi i a koe - Help yourself.

Mōrena e kō, Mōrena e tama - Good morning

He parakuihi māku - May I have breakfast please?

Haere mai - Come here

Hoki atu - Return

Tēnā, kōrerohia mai!

ROAD SAFETY

Approximately 1.3 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes. Between 20 and 50 million people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury. Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5 - 29 years. The main reason behind these road accidents is not following/knowing traffic & road safety rules.

Trafficquiz.com is FREE to use website developed with an aim to spread awareness regarding traffic rules and road safety rules. Through trafficquiz.com our tamariki can learn and test their knowledge about traffic & road safety rules in an entertaining way i.e. by playing quizzes. These quizzes can be found on our kura website.

PROGRESS - CANOPY

This is the end of week 2 of the canopy.  The frame is up.  The construction of the canopy has initiated conversation amongst our tamariki that construction is a possible career they would like to pursue.

INFECTION PREVENTION

Throughout these winter months, many of our tamariki have been absent due to illness.  Seasonal colds, flu and other respiratory illnesses circulating within our kura and our community are inevitable during our wet and cold winter.  To protect our tamariki and our staff from the spread of respiratory infections this winter, and recognising COVID-19 is still circulating, it is important that we follow these infection prevention measures.

KĀKAHU TIKA

Please ensure our tamariki are dressed appropriately for each day, e.g. jacket, beanie.  Ensure our tamariki are prepared for whakapakari tinana, e.g., suitable footwear, training shorts, training top and the kura hoodie or kura sweat-top after each session.

Since Monday, our tamariki have been back into daily structured exercises.  It is pleasing to see how active our tamariki and our kaiako are.  An appendix about the cross-country training dates has been added to this week’s Wāhia.  Please take note of these dates.   Nā te hau ora, ka hau ako mai ngā tamariki.  Ka rawe!

STAFF INITIATIVE - TEAM

This term, the teaching staff are involved in an initiative called TEAM.  The objective is to provide service to each other and contribute to a better us, to a better team.  Both Whaea Atareiria and Whaea Kahu have initiated this challenge.

APPRECIATION

At the end of term 2, I shared photos of a lack of appreciation towards the seating in our kura van.  As a reminder, please take care of what we have as a kura both big and small.

TE PŪTAHI NUI

Te Pūtahi Nui is a 2-day conference for kaiako in the Ngā Kura ā-Iwi collective.  The conference is held in Rotorua.  This has become an annual event for the kaiako of our kura to attend.  This year, this is held in week 3, the 3rd and 4th August.  These are teacher only days.

TE IAIA O TE REO

Beginning next week, our tamariki will be acknowledged for their efforts to converse in te reo Māori.  At the moment our efforts are sporadic at best.  Our recent past has informed us that what we are doing isn’t working.  Our tamariki will be awarded points for their attempt, the use of kīwaha and whakataukī, the fluency of their reo and more importantly, the frequency of their reo.  All our tamariki have been placed into houses or kāhui.  The house or kāhui with the most points near the end of the year will be treated to a day out at my discretion.

CANOPY

This is our first week back to kura and there is already a hive of activity.  Our tamariki are busy being active in and out of their classrooms, the tī kouka at the front of kura are being felled to make room for the canopy being constructed over the netball courts.  Weather depending, the canopy will be completed in 4 weeks time.

Our wet weather is now upon us and it is accompanied with its friend the cold temperature.   We currently have 2 positive cases of Covid and there is strep throat amongst our community.  It is important we remain vigilant to keep our tamariki and whānau warm and safe.  If our tamariki are sick, please keep them at home.

MAHI KĀMURA

Tau kē te mahi i kāmurahia nei e ā tātou tamariki tuakana.  He paenga tēnei i mahia e rātou.  Me mihi ka tika ki a Pā Matarae Royal, he tuakana ia nō Matua Paora.  Nāna rātou i tohutohu me pēwhea te hanga.

Nā Pā Matarae tēnei whakaahua i mahi.

E TĀKARO ANA

He rawe te kite atu i ā tātou tamariki e nuku ana, e neke ana.  Tama mai, kōtiro mai e tākaro ana, e whakawhanake ana i ō rātou pūkenga.  Ko te katoa o ā tātou tamariki e whēnei ana te mahi.  Tau rawa koutou mā.

KIA TŪPARA TE HOE

Last year, a number of our Year 7s and 8s were participants in a river initiative called  Kura Waitī.  This year, a selective group of our seniors are again engaged in learning more about our river.  Below are photos that capture some activities our tamariki are involved in.

Me whakaatu ka tika i ngā momo mahi i mahia e ā tātou tamariki huri noa i te kura.  E pōkea ana ā tātou tamariki e ngā tini kaupapa o tēnei wāhanga, otirā te katoa mai o tēnei tau. Ki tā Whaea Ariana tirohanga, e tau ana ā tātou tamariki.  He tohu pai tēnei.

WINTER HEALTH AND VACCINATION REMINDERS

Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand encourages whānau to vaccinate our tamariki for pneumococcal disease, Meningococcal B, measles, and flu, alongside their three COVID-19 vaccines to provide the greatest level of protection heading into winter.

Tamariki aged six months to 12 years are eligible for free flu vaccinations.

When our tamariki wake up in the mornings, greet our tamariki by saying, ‘Mōrena, He moe pai?’ Āe, he moe pai e Māmā / He pai te moe / I moe roa ahau / He tino moe tērā.

When our tamariki retire to bed for the night, this expression can be shared,

Pōmārie, kia pai tāu nā moe.  Hei āpōpō.

MAHI POI

Tuesday afternoon, one of our tamariki was accosted by a group of boys for his scooter.  This tamaiti is to be applauded for his bravery as he was determined not to give up his scooter.  I am also appreciative of Preston Muru of Ngāruawāhia Primary School for his intervention in to this incident.  Please keep a vigilant eye on all our tamariki walking, scootering or biking to and from each of our respective kura in Ngāruawāhia.

PAETUKUTUKU

I highly encourage our whānau to look at the kura website that has been refreshed by Matua Chris.  Features include the fortnightly Wāhia, our results from the recent swimming competitions and a term calendar.

E rua ngā tau, kāore tēnei kaupapa i tū ake.

Today, we congratulate Matua Anaru for graduating from Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, Whakatāne Campus with a Bachelor of Education (Teaching). Tau rawa!

KI TE KĀPUIA, E KORE E WHATI

Throughout term 1, the staff have been engaged in a weekly exercise programme.  Each session is full of effort, encouragement, collaboration and anticipation.  If the expectation for our tamariki is to have a good level of fitness, it is the expectation of the staff to be fit as well.  This initiative is designed to bring the staff together, to build each other by doing something that is challenging.  This initiative will continue throughout the year.

KELLY SPORTS HOLIDAY PROGRAMME

Kelly Sports are running a holiday programme in the April holidays. An attachment about the activities of the programme has been added to this week’s Wāhia.  I believe all our tamariki should have a sound grasp of the basic skills of catching, throwing and striking before they leave kura.  Holiday programmes facilitated by Kelly Sports provides another layer of learning of these skills for our tamariki.

TE RĀ WHAKAMUTUNGA

Next Thursday 6th April is the last day of this term.  We will be finishing at 2.00pm.  We return Monday 24th April for the beginning of term 2.

HEAD LICE ALERT!

The kura has received a number of reports from whānau about the return of these irritable critters.  An attachment has been added to this week’s Wāhia showing how to treat ‘kutu.’.

MEASLES

With people travelling overseas again, there’s a risk that someone with measles could unknowingly bring the disease back to Aotearoa.  Measles spread easily and quickly, usually between people who are unimmunised or only partially immunised.  It can be serious and life threatening.

The best protection against measles is the free MMR vaccine.  It will protect you, your whānau, and prevent the virus from spreading.

More information about measles vaccination can be found here:

Measles vaccination - Ministry of Health.

KEEPING OUR TAMARIKI SAFE

We’re all responsible for keeping our tamariki safe in our families and communities. It’s also important for our tamariki to know how to identify unsafe behaviour and what to do if they feel unsafe.

We encourage parents and other caregivers to talk to our tamariki about what inappropriate behaviour and actions look like, rather than the “types of people” that could cause harm.

Advice for our whānau:

Congratulations to all our tamariki who competed last week at our kura swimming competition.  As mentioned in a previous Wāhia, I want all our tamariki to be competent and efficient swimmers in any body of water.  The swimming results have been shared on the kura website.

NAU MAI, HOKI MAI, WHAKATAU MAI E!

Nau mai, whakatau mai i Maukutea Ratu-Eketone.  He tama ia nā Nathan Eketone. Ko te mea nui, ko te tūmanako nui, ka puta ake a Maukutea hei tangata pai, hei tangata pukumahi anō hoki.

HE TIROHANGA NOA

The kaiako have settled our tamariki quickly into their classroom routines.  During paramanawa and lunch, our tamariki are jovial, interacting with each other by playing a myriad of traditional games or games they spontaneously make up on the spot.   Tau kē!

KIA TŪPATO!

Our tamariki who walk home via Ngāruawāhia High School must follow the footpath along the northern perimeter to Hui-ngā-rua, the marae at the high school.  Our tamariki are to cross Kent St at the high school marae.  Do not cut through the high school and do not loiter amongst the car park at the high school.

If our tamariki cross over at River Road, please use the crossing between the marae and Ngā Miro Health Centre.  Take your time to look both ways before crossing.

MATUA RAUTIA - IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD

Our tupuna knew that tamariki were our brightest future.  Still today most of us understand that growing our tamariki is the biggest job we ever get to do, and sometimes it can be really hard.

It is good to see an improvement in the standard of uniform adorned by our tamariki.  I’m a believer in our tamariki wearing a uniform and wearing it correctly.

Red Sweatshirts - $37.50

Our tamariki look sharp when they wear the correct kura uniform.

RAROTONGA

To the Year 8 and Year 7 whānau who have expressed the interest of your tamaiti to travel to Rarotonga in September 2023 and paid your deposit, continue to inform Whaea Kōtiro when payments have been made.  The dates are Monday 4th - Sunday 10th September.  Ensure your tamaiti has a current passport.

TE MAHI KAUHOE

Hīnei ā tātou tamariki e kaukau ana.  Hau mai te rongo o te harikoa, hau mai te rongo o te pūkana. 1, 2, 3 Pūkana!

Nā Whaea Kōtiro tēnei whakaahua i mahi.
